Shopify 2FA Access Blocker — Solutions & Workflow
Overview
During an internal sync, the team identified that 2FA is blocking access to a client's Shopify account. Access is needed within the week to begin building landing pages. Both Karly (account manager) and Jeff (developer) require access, but the current 2FA setup is tied to an unknown authentication app and the QR code fallback method is failing.
Problem Details
- The team's Shopify login is linked to a Google account that has 2FA enabled
- The authentication app associated with the account is unknown — someone previously set it up on a device that is no longer accessible
- The QR code scan method was attempted (via Melissa's phone) but failed with the error: "No matching passwords saved for this account"
- Both Karly and Jeff need independent access — Jeff will be doing the actual build work in Shopify
Proposed Solutions
Karly will present the following options to the client, in order of preference:
Option 1 — Client Temporarily Disables 2FA (Preferred)
- Client goes into Shopify settings and turns off two-factor authentication temporarily
- Allows the full team to log in without friction
- Fastest path to unblocked access
- Client should re-enable 2FA once team members are set up
Option 2 — Client Manually Adds Karly and Jeff
- Client adds Karly directly to the Shopify account
- Once Karly has access, she generates a recovery code
- Karly shares the recovery code with Jeff so he can log in independently
Action Items
- [ ] Karly to email client requesting either: (a) temporary 2FA disable, or (b) manual addition of Karly and Jeff to the account (@Karly Oykhman)
- [ ] Once access is granted, Karly to generate a recovery code and share with Jeff (@Karly Oykhman)
Context
This blocker surfaced in the context of landing page work that needs to begin within approximately one week. The landing page drafts are already in progress (see [1]) and are being shown to the client conceptually while the build access issue is resolved.
