GoHighLevel Email Setup

GoHighLevel (GHL) is Asymmetric's platform of choice for managing client email marketing campaigns. This article covers the end-to-end setup process: importing contacts, building templates, and navigating campaign analytics.

Contact Import

Client contact lists are typically sourced from a prior email platform (e.g., MailChimp) or a CRM export. The standard import path is a CSV upload directly into GHL's Contacts module.

Steps:
1. Obtain a CSV export from the client's existing platform (MailChimp, spreadsheet, etc.)
2. Upload the CSV into GHL via the Contacts section (book icon in the left nav)
3. Confirm the imported count with the client to validate completeness
4. Ask the client to confirm that all imported contacts are appropriate recipients for email marketing

Avant Gardening example: ~2,000 contacts were imported from a MailChimp CSV. The list had been dormant since MailChimp's free tier capped at 2,000 contacts. Tim confirmed the list was acceptable as a starting point, acknowledging some contacts may be stale.

Future contact growth: GHL can be connected to website contact forms so that new form submissions are automatically added to the contact list, keeping it current without manual imports.

Building Email Templates

Email templates are built inside GHL's Marketing → Email section before any campaigns are scheduled or sent.

Workflow:
1. Receive approved email copy from the copywriting phase (typically a Google Doc or shared file)
2. Build templates in GHL using the drag-and-drop or HTML editor
3. Send template previews to the client for design and content approval
4. Incorporate feedback, then schedule sends

Standard deliverable for a new client: 4 evergreen email templates covering core service themes. These serve as the foundation for ongoing nurture campaigns.

Avant Gardening example: Karly drafted copy for four evergreen emails and planned to build the corresponding GHL templates within one week of the 2025-12-15 meeting, targeting delivery to Tim for review by early the following week.

Campaign Analytics

Once campaigns are live, GHL's email dashboard provides high-level and campaign-level reporting.

Navigation: Marketing → Email (paper airplane icon in left nav)

Available metrics:
- Total campaigns delivered
- Open rates
- Click-through rates (CTR)
- Per-campaign breakdowns

The dashboard shows sample data until the first campaign is sent. Clients can be oriented to this view during onboarding so they know where to find performance data independently.

Sorting and filtering: Campaigns can be filtered by name, making it easy to isolate specific sends (e.g., evergreen series vs. seasonal promotions) as the campaign library grows.
