Google Business Profile Verification
Overview
A Google Business Profile (GBP) that is unverified or incorrectly configured will not appear prominently in local search results, undermining local SEO efforts. Verification typically requires the business owner to provide official documentation and complete steps that cannot be delegated to an agency — making client involvement essential.

When This Applies
Use this process when a client's GBP is:
- Unverified or suspended
- Showing incorrect business information
- Not appearing in local map pack results
- Flagged as needing re-verification after an ownership or address change
What You'll Need
- Access to the Google account associated with the GBP listing
- Business registration documents (e.g., state business license, articles of incorporation, or equivalent official filing)
- The business's legal name, address, and phone number exactly as they appear on registration documents
- A point of contact on the client side who can complete the verification steps (Google sends verification to the business owner, not the agency)
Process
1. Locate the Listing
- Go to business.google.com and sign in with the associated Google account.
- Confirm the listing exists. If it does not, create a new profile before proceeding.
2. Initiate Verification
- Open the listing and look for a "Verify now" prompt or a verification status banner.
- Select the available verification method. Google may offer:
- Video recording (most common for new or re-verification requests)
- Postcard by mail (3–5 business days)
- Phone or email (if eligible)
- Live video call with a Google representative
3. Prepare Documentation
Google may request proof of business during the video or live call verification. Have the following ready:
- Official business registration document showing the legal business name and address
- Any signage, equipment, or physical evidence of the business at the listed address (relevant for video verification)
Note for Shine: Katie Geiser holds the business registration documents and must complete this step directly. The agency can provide the step-by-step guide but cannot submit verification on the client's behalf.
4. Complete Verification
Follow the on-screen prompts for the chosen method. For video verification:
- Show the business exterior or signage
- Show proof of business ownership (registration document)
- Follow any additional instructions from the Google reviewer
5. Post-Verification Checks
Once verified, confirm the following are accurate on the profile:
- Business name (matches registration exactly)
- Address and service area
- Phone number
- Website URL
- Business category and description
- Hours of operation
- Photos
Common Issues
| Issue | Resolution |
|---|---|
| Verification email/postcard not received | Check spam; confirm address on file matches registration; request re-send |
| Profile suspended after verification | Review Google's reinstatement request form; may require additional documentation |
| Duplicate listings exist | Claim or request removal of duplicates before verifying the primary listing |
| Agency cannot access the listing | Client must grant agency Manager access via the GBP dashboard after verification is complete |
Agency Access After Verification
Once the client has verified the profile, they should grant the agency Manager access:
- In the GBP dashboard, go to Business Profile settings → Managers
- Add the agency email (e.g.,
team@asymmetric.pro) as a Manager - Agency can then manage posts, respond to reviews, and update information
