ClickUp Board Renaming Bug — Workaround

Overview

A ClickUp bug prevents certain users from renaming sprint boards through the standard rename interface. Attempting to use the rename option surfaces an HTML string or fails silently, leaving the board name unchanged. This appears to be a permissions or role issue — not all team members can rename boards even when they expect to have sufficient access.

This was first encountered during Sprint 47 planning when Melissa Cusumano was unable to rename the Sprint 46 board to Sprint 47 despite multiple attempts via both the top bar and inline rename fields.

Symptoms

Workaround

Have a team member with the appropriate ClickUp permissions perform the rename instead.

Steps:

  1. Navigate to the board view.
  2. Click the board name in the field directly below the top purple navigation bar (not the inline title elsewhere on the page).
  3. Clear the existing text entirely — do not attempt to edit around the template string.
  4. Type the new board name (e.g., Sprint 47).
  5. Press Enter to confirm.

Note: If you encounter the HTML/template string, erase it completely before typing. Editing around it will cause the rename to fail.

Who Can Rename

During the Sprint 47 incident, Chris Østergaard was able to successfully rename the board while Melissa Cusumano could not. If you are blocked, escalate the rename to whoever holds the relevant admin or owner role in your ClickUp workspace.

Context

"Isn't that weird? I tried it the last time, without bothering you, and I thought I was doing it the right way."
— Melissa Cusumano, Sprint 47 Planning Meeting

"I've done it. Yeah, if you do it that way, it messes, it doesn't allow you to do it. So what I did was, I just went in exactly what I told you, typed it in 47, whatever, and then click enter."
— Chris Østergaard, Sprint 47 Planning Meeting
