FinwellU Domain & Redirect Strategy
Overview
When a client operates under a registered trademark brand name but wants to launch a more marketable sub-brand, a redirect strategy preserves legal and SEO equity while giving the new brand room to grow. The NextLevel/FinwellU project illustrates this pattern clearly: the existing "Financial Wellness Done Right" domain and trademark are retained as the canonical destination, while the new FinwellU domain redirects to it.
The Pattern
Primary domain: Keep the established, trademarked domain as the live site. This preserves any existing SEO authority, backlinks, and legal standing tied to that domain.
Secondary domain (new brand): Purchase and point the new brand domain as a redirect to the primary. Visitors who type or click the new brand name land on the primary site, where the new brand name is prominently featured in the logo and copy.
This approach lets the new brand name circulate in marketing materials, sales conversations, and word-of-mouth without requiring a full domain migration or risking loss of the trademark's legal protections.
Why FinwellU Was Chosen
The "FinwellU" name emerged from interviews with HR directors and benefits managers — the core buyer persona. Key factors:
- Rolls off the tongue in a benefits-package sales context
- "U" connotes university/education, reinforcing the program's educational positioning
- Avoids "financial" as the lead word, which can signal sales intent over wellness intent
- URL availability — multiple FinwellU variants were secured
- "Finwell" alone was unavailable (held by another party and in use by a Nashville-based rep)
"The Fenwell thing worked the best for them, and I just threw the U on there — because the URL is available, but also kind of keeps with that U logo we have, university education, that type of stuff."
— Peter Tourville
Trademark Considerations
"Financial Wellness Done Right" is a registered trademark (Circle R — ®), held by the LLC that owns the brand. This is a key reason the domain is not abandoned:
- The LLC and trademark are legally tied to the existing domain/brand
- Abandoning the domain could complicate trademark maintenance
- The redirect strategy keeps the trademark active and visible while the new brand gains recognition
Implementation note: Anywhere "Financial Wellness Done Right" appears on the site, it should carry the ® symbol.
SEO Implications
- Inbound links and any existing domain authority remain on the primary domain
- The FinwellU redirect passes traffic to the primary without splitting authority
- Copy on the primary site should incorporate both brand names to help search engines associate them
- AAG is handling keyword integration as part of the copy refresh
Implementation Steps
- Confirm primary domain remains the live build target (already in progress)
- Configure FinwellU domain(s) as 301 redirects to the primary domain
- Update logo on the primary site to display "Finwell" inside the U mark (requires vector file from client — see [1])
- Add ® to all instances of "Financial Wellness Done Right" across the site
