WooCommerce Variable-Price Product Research

Overview

This task was assigned to Ishak during the 2026-01-29 team stand-up. The goal is to investigate whether WooCommerce can support a variable or open-amount price field on a product, as a replacement for the donation plugin currently conflicting with WooCommerce on the [1] site.

Background

The Doodla Farms site has a donation plugin that conflicts with WooCommerce, causing instability. The plugin was deactivated as a temporary fix. A WooCommerce product for donations already exists on the site, but standard WooCommerce products do not natively allow the customer to enter an arbitrary dollar amount — which is the core feature the donation plugin provided.

Mark's guidance from the stand-up:

"I think there's a way to create a product with a variable price in WooCommerce. We need to research that."

Research Questions

Fallback Option

If a clean variable-price solution cannot be found, Mark and Karly agreed that fixed donation tiers are an acceptable alternative:

"What we could do, Karly, is just create some standard donation amounts, $100, $500, something like that. And then people don't need to have that level of granularity."

Karly confirmed: "I think just having set amounts is fine for the amount of work that that would be."

Fixed amounts would be implemented as WooCommerce product variations — no additional plugin required.
