Problem: Open-Box Items Shipping When They Shouldn't
A customer purchased an open-box item through the WooCommerce storefront and expected it to ship, despite Flynn Audio's policy that open-box items are available for local pickup only. The existing checkout flow offered optional "install" and "pickup" checkboxes — neither was required, leaving room for customers to complete a purchase without acknowledging the pickup constraint.
Root Cause
- Checkboxes were optional, not required
- No clear, prominent notice that open-box items cannot be shipped
- Customers could proceed through checkout without selecting either option
Solution: Simplified, Enforced Checkout Flow
Agreed approach from the Feb 2026 call:
- Remove the existing "install" and "pickup" checkboxes
- Replace with a single required checkbox that the customer must check before completing purchase
- Checkbox label (or adjacent copy) should state clearly, in bold, that the item is for local pickup only
- Below the checkbox, add a smaller-text prompt: "If you'd like installation, please note that in the order notes field" — directing customers to the existing notes input rather than a separate checkbox
This approach reduces ambiguity, enforces acknowledgment, and keeps the checkout form clean.
Optional Geo-Restriction Layer
Jeff (dev) flagged that WooCommerce's MaxMine geolocation service can restrict purchases by billing state. Limiting checkout to Wisconsin billing addresses would add a secondary guardrail against out-of-area purchases. This is a supplementary measure, not a replacement for the checkbox fix.
Product Description Audit
A full website audit is underway to identify products missing descriptions. Many products were originally sourced from Crutchfield; those descriptions were removed, leaving gaps.
Why It Matters
- Missing descriptions hurt SEO — product pages with no content don't rank
- Sam has written descriptions for some products (Arctic Start, iDataStart units); others remain blank
- Asymmetric is cataloging all products with: name, URL, description status, visibility, dropdown availability
Process
- Audit spreadsheet completed (target: ~1 week from meeting date)
- Asymmetric drafts SEO-optimized descriptions for all products missing them
- Drafts sent to Sam for review and approval before publishing
New Product Listings
Two categories of new listings to be added:
